Bollywood is the Hindi Film industry that is located in India, it’s one of the largest centres of film production in the world, the other two are the US based Hollywood and Nigeria based Nollywood, the name “Bollywood” is a portmanteau that is derived from Bombay (the former name for Mumbai) and Hollywood, the center of the US film industry, the major difference being that while Hollywood is the name of a physical place in the US, Bollywood is not a physical place.

(Released on August 15, 1975): This movie was produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by his son Ramesh Sippy. It stars Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan, this classic Indian movie is a must watch and one of the greatest Hindi films ever having received Best Film of 50 years by Filmfare Awards, also coming up at number one on the British Film Institute‘s poll of “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time. The story centres on two criminals that were hired by a retired and handicapped police officer to capture the ruthless and dreaded dacoit Gabbar Singh who massacred the land owner’s family, the movie is filled with songs and super characters, that’s why we have listed it on our top 10 Bollywood movies of all times

2. MUGHAL-E AZAM

Another Indian top 10 Bollywood movie is Mughal-e Azam which implies the Greatest of the Mughals in English, this is a 1960 Indian movie directed by K. Asif and produced by Shapoorji Pallonji. It centres around Anarkali, a dancing girl in the court of the great 16th-century Mughal Emperor Akbar. It’s also considered a classic and one of the best Indian movies of all times. This movie actually took 15 years to complete. It was the first highest grossing film until Sholay was made. In the year 2004, the movie was released in color.

3. MOTHER INDIA

This is a classic top ten Bollywood movie released in 1957, it was also nominated for a Best Foreign Language Movie. It was the highest grossing film at its time. Mother India was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Oscar, Mother India was directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, and Raaj Kumar.

4. GUIDE

This is another top 10 Bollywood movie that received seven Filmfare awards. It was produced and released in 1965 and was a movie that was originally based on the book, the Guide. Starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. It was directed by Vijay Anand, who also contributed to the screenplay.

5. AWAARA

Released in 1951, the movie was a top nominee for Grand Prize of the Cannes Film during the Festival in 1953, it was directed and produced by Raj Kapoor who also plays the leading role.

6. ANKUR

This is a top selling movie that was directed by Shyam Benegal and released in 1974. The movie is based on a true story that took place back in the 1950s in Hyderbad. It won 43 awards throughout India and other countries, it was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 24th Berlin International Film Festival.

7. HUM AAPKE HAI KOUN

Hum Aapke Hai Koun means (Who am I to You..!) in English, the movie was released in 1994 and was known for the it’s great music which was also part of what made it very successful.
